ALANYA EXPORT AVOCADO TO 20 COUNTRIES
Alanya, one of the important tourism centers of the Mediterranean, has also been known for its tropical fruit production in recent years. The economic value of some tropical fruits planted in the district for experimental purposes has led farmers to alternative crops such as mango, avocado and dragon fruit. The farmers are happy because of the fact that they export to 15 foreign countries already. The town has also been bright star in real estate business with property sales in Alanya increasing for the last 6 years.
Alanya Avocado Producers Union President Hilmi Sevilgen also emphasized that avocado, which had no commercial value before 2010, became a product with high economic value. “The production of avocados, which was 30-35 million pieces in 2018, reached 40 million in 2019. We have an expectation of 60-70 million in 2020. Last year we exported to 12 countries. This year, this number will increase to 15-16 countries. Our target is exporting avocados to 20 countries.”
Pointing out that avocado consumption has exceeded 50 percent in the domestic market, Sevilgen said that their goal is to increase this rate to over 80 percent.
District Agriculture and Forestry Manager Mehmet Rüzgar told AA correspondent that the district can grow many tropical fruits due to the climate characteristics. Reminding of the fact that citrus fruits are also grown in Alanya, Rüzgar said, “38 tropical fruits are grown in our district. Avocados have also been added to those who bring major economic income. Growing tropical fruits such as mango, passiflora, carambola, papaya, gojiberry, dragon fruit, kumquat and pepino are also increasing day by day.” he spoke.
